A House of Representatives member recently expressed concern, stating, “Somebody who is earning 70,000 a month, his 70,000 cannot last him for three days in this country.” This prompted a surprising response from a user, who claimed, “If you are manageable and economical, 20,000 should be able to take care of you for one month.”

This response is problematic and out of touch with the current realities in Nigeria. Living on 20,000 naira a month is far from sustainable, given the high cost of basic necessities like food, transportation, and housing. Suggesting that such a small amount is sufficient dismisses the very real struggles many people face, making it nearly impossible to live a decent, healthy life. Reasonable discourse should acknowledge the economic challenges and advocate for practical solutions.
