After the Federal Government announced the cancellation of Nigeria’s Independence Day parade, skepticism spread online. One user wrote: “At least once they’re being honest with our independence day celebration. Because we’re definitely not Independent.” While this remark captures the frustration many Nigerians feel about economic hardship, insecurity, and poor governance, it dismisses the significance of independence itself. Nigeria’s challenges today do not erase the reality that the country is no longer under colonial rule. Instead of undermining the meaning of independence, such discussions should focus on accountability, leadership, and policies that will ensure true freedom reflects in people’s lives.
