After the tragic death of Lieutenant Samson Haruna, a Nigerian Army officer allegedly set ablaze by his wife during a domestic dispute in Akwa Ibom, another comment read, “Men should be calming down, cos what did he do wrong.” This remark unfairly shifts blame onto men as a group, implying that male behavior is the cause of such tragedies. While emotional control is important for everyone, using this incident to generalize and fault men distorts the real issue — domestic violence. Violence is never gendered or justified. Both men and women must learn to manage conflict peacefully, without resorting to harm.
