Following the news of Ogun State raising alarm over the rise in mental health cases, with over 10,000 patients treated in just six months, a comment read, “Implication of yahoo, it has started manifesting.” This statement carelessly links the growing mental health crisis to internet fraud, ignoring the many other possible causes such as depression, trauma, drug abuse, and economic hardship. Reducing such a complex issue to one stereotype trivializes the struggles of those battling mental illness. Mental health challenges require compassion, awareness, and proper care — not baseless assumptions that shame victims or stigmatize an entire group of people.
