The original post showed a gun runner in Zamfara caught with an RPG, two AK-47s and ammunition hidden inside bags of dried fish — a stark example of how military-grade weapons are slipping into civilian markets.
In response, one user wrote, “Make them just allow everybody to use gun for this country so that peace go lean.” That idea is dangerous. Flooding a country already plagued by illicit arms, weak enforcement and corruption would likely increase homicides, vigilante violence, accidental deaths and arms diversion to criminals.
Instead of mass arming, Nigeria needs stronger intelligence and border controls, rigorous prosecution of traffickers, professional policing, community-based safety programs, and—if civilian ownership is ever considered—strict licensing, mandatory training, safe-storage laws and independent oversight. Quick fixes that normalize guns only make insecurity worse.
