A misleading post circulated online claiming, “27-year-old Madu Chukwuemeka Miracle arrested for smuggling cocaine hidden neatly in bathing soaps from Kenya going to Spain,” falsely identifying the suspect as an Igbo man.
Spreading fake information—especially attaching a tribe or name to a crime—fuels ethnic hatred and unfair stereotypes. Once people see a familiar tribal name, they associate the wrongdoing with an entire group rather than the individual responsible. Such posts not only misinform but also deepen division and mistrust among Nigerians. Accuracy and verification are crucial before sharing sensitive stories.
