A man made a post celebrating his newly acquired Canadian citizenship, but the joy quickly turned sour after a white man questioned why Nigerians “always celebrate” getting another country’s passport and asked if Nigeria is truly that unlivable. In the comment chaos that followed, one Nigerian added, “Na wetin fit Nigeria be this… they want to show off and pepper whoever they want to pepper. Loud about everything.”

This kind of response is unnecessary and self-defeating. People share milestones because they’re proud — not because they want to spite anyone. Becoming a citizen of another country is a huge achievement, especially after years of paperwork, sacrifice, and uncertainty.

Reducing someone’s joy to “loudness” or pettiness says more about the commenter than the celebrant. Nigerians deserve to celebrate progress without being shamed for it.

Joy is not a crime.
