After a man celebrated gaining Canadian citizenship, the comments spiraled into arguments about whether Nigeria is livable. In the heated exchange, one user claimed, “It is easier to live and thrive in Nigeria than in America.”

This kind of statement ignores the complexity of people’s lived experiences. Thriving depends on many factors — economy, safety, opportunity, support systems, personal goals — and these differ widely from person to person. Comparing entire countries with sweeping generalizations oversimplifies real struggles Nigerians face daily, just as it dismisses the challenges immigrants face abroad.

Instead of turning achievements or frustrations into competition, we should respect each person’s journey. What is easy for one may be impossible for another.

Honesty requires nuance, not blanket claims.
