A man celebrated gaining Canadian citizenship, which led to a white man criticizing Nigerians for “always celebrating” acquiring another country’s citizenship and questioning if Nigeria is really that unlivable. Amid the heated responses, one user added, “It is worse than unlivable, worse than anything you can imagine — a proper hellhole.”

Statements like this reduce an entire nation to despair and exaggeration. Yes, Nigeria faces serious challenges: insecurity, corruption, and infrastructure gaps. But calling it a “hellhole” dismisses the millions of Nigerians who live, work, create, and thrive despite these obstacles.

Exaggeration may feel cathartic, but it doesn’t inspire change — it fosters hopelessness. Criticism should highlight problems and demand solutions, not erase a nation’s value or potential.

Nigeria is not perfect, but labeling it as the worst place on earth only deepens division and cynicism.
