After news broke that ISWAP terrorists killed Brigadier General Uba — a tragedy unlike anything Nigeria has seen in 15 years of insurgency — the internet was filled with shock and outrage. But one sarcastic, insensitive comment stood out: “Nigeria govts and military should continue the rehabilitation programme for the terrorists, impressive after this good news.”
This kind of response is reckless. It mocks a national tragedy and trivializes the death of a senior officer who paid the ultimate price while serving his country. Yes, many Nigerians question the government’s controversial deradicalization programs, but celebrating or weaponizing a soldier’s death to score a point is deeply disrespectful.
At moments like this, the focus should be on accountability, strategy, and honoring our fallen heroes — not using grief as an opportunity for cheap shots or political sarcasm.
