After news broke that the abducted military General was close to being rescued before terrorists ultimately captured and killed him, Nigerians were understandably shaken. But amid the grief, frustration spilled over into comments — including one that read: “We are just surviving in a finished and disgraced country.”
While the pain behind that statement is real, the message itself is harmful. Calling Nigeria “finished” during a moment of national tragedy doesn’t solve anything — it only deepens hopelessness. People are mourning a life lost, soldiers are risking everything, and families are terrified. Declaring the entire country “disgraced” dismisses the efforts of those still fighting to keep Nigeria afloat.
It’s okay to be angry. It’s okay to feel disappointed. But hopelessness shouldn’t be the loudest voice. What we need in moments like this is clarity, accountability, and unity — not sweeping despair that makes recovery feel impossible.
