A lady asked online why her male friend rejected her financial help, saying he “doesn’t take free money from women.” Among the many reactions, one controversial take stood out: “Women no dey give person free money. Repercussions dey come with am.”

The comment shocks because it paints all women’s support as conditional and dangerous. Logically, help can come without hidden costs, regardless of gender. Many global and local institutions, including the United Nations, emphasize equality, dignity, and shared responsibility in society. Assuming every act of kindness from women has consequences dismisses real generosity and reinforces unnecessary fear.

While it’s fair to discuss boundaries in friendships, turning an entire gender into a stereotype creates division, not wisdom. Kindness isn’t a trap by default. Real red flags aren’t in who gives help—they’re in who makes you believe help is a threat.
