After news broke that gunmen attacked Abia State Governor Alex Otti’s convoy in Imo State, many Nigerians reacted with fear and frustration over the rising insecurity. But moments like this also attract extreme and dangerous comments. One questionable response read: “The community should arm up their youths and defend themselves. And if the government try to compromise their safety, they should also treat them as part of the insecurities.”
While people are understandably scared, encouraging communities to arm themselves and view the government as an enemy is a recipe for chaos. This type of comment promotes vigilantism, fuels distrust, and can escalate violence. What the situation needs is proper investigation, accountability, and stronger security measures—not calls that could push citizens into unnecessary conflict or lawlessness.
