The controversy began when a lady anonymously shared that her boyfriend—who sponsored her university education, bought her a house, and set up a business for her—had lost everything and now wanted to live in the house he bought. She refused because she does not want to marry him and cannot live with him unmarried. This confession triggered intense reactions, but one comment went far beyond reasonable critique: “I respect women’s ruthlessness. Nigeria men too mumu.”

This remark is problematic on several levels. Rather than offering thoughtful advice, it glorifies cold-heartedness as a virtue and uses the incident to insult Nigerian men collectively. Such sweeping generalizations promote toxic gender hostility and normalize emotional cruelty as strength. A complex personal dilemma should spark balanced discussion, not encourage harmful stereotypes or disrespect toward an entire group.
