Following the backlash against a man who told a woman, “You’re not even rapeable, you’re safe,” one response attempted to justify his remark: “Until I see what the girl wrote on her post I no fit condemn what the young man said.” This comment is deeply troubling. It suggests that a woman’s words or behavior could excuse a statement that trivializes sexual violence and dehumanizes her body. No post, opinion, or provocation justifies language that mocks rape or implies someone’s safety is tied to desirability. This mindset shifts blame from the offender to the victim and reinforces rape culture. Accountability should be clear and unconditional. Harmful statements stand on their own and must be condemned regardless of context, excuses, or attempts to dilute responsibility.
