The Nigerian Military’s confirmation that some officers allegedly plotted to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government has continued to spark heated reactions online. The revelation, involving ranks from captain to brigadier-general, raised serious alarms given Nigeria’s history with coups and the damage military rule inflicted on democracy and stability.

Amid calls for accountability, some reactions crossed into dangerous territory. One such comment asked: “why them no succeed naa”

Rather than expressing concern, the question appears to mock the failed plot and subtly wish it had succeeded. Critics condemned the remark for trivializing a grave national security threat and ignoring the violence, chaos, and regression a successful coup could cause.

Many observers noted that while frustration with governance is real, normalizing or joking about coups reflects deep disillusionment and risks eroding respect for democratic processes. For them, failed leadership should be challenged through civic engagement—not celebrated instability.
