A video of a lady revealing how a car engineer covered all the check lights in her car to cause further damage and increase repair costs sparked outrage. In response, one commenter stated, “Nigerians are not good people.” This sweeping generalization is harmful and unfair, as it stereotypes an entire country based on the dishonest actions of a few. While the engineer’s actions are undoubtedly wrong, attributing such behavior to all Nigerians ignores the reality that unethical practices exist worldwide, not just in Nigeria. Crooked engineers and dishonest professionals can be found in many countries, and such incidents should not define an entire nation. Stereotyping undermines the positive contributions and integrity of countless Nigerians who act with honesty and professionalism every day.
