A video of police officers allegedly carting away election materials in Rivers State has sparked widespread anger online. One controversial comment reads, “I believe police are always the instigators of violence in any election. Taking the police away, every election will be free and fair.” While emotions are high, blaming the entire police force for electoral violence oversimplifies the problem.

The role of the police in elections is to maintain law and order, and while misconduct by some officers should be condemned, removing police entirely from the process could lead to chaos. What’s needed is not their absence but reform, training, and accountability to ensure they act impartially. We must focus on improving the system rather than dismissing it altogether.
