A recent decree by the NDLEA requiring married women to provide a letter of approval from their husbands to obtain a visa has sparked widespread outrage. While many have voiced their disagreement, one comment praised the decision, stating, “Much needed policy… this is commendable.”

This view, however, raises concerns about gender equality and women’s autonomy. Such a policy implies that married women lack the independence to make decisions about travel without male approval, reinforcing outdated patriarchal norms. Restricting women’s freedom in this way undermines their rights and reinforces inequality. Policies should aim to empower individuals rather than limit their choices based on gender or marital status. Women deserve the same freedom and respect to make decisions about their lives as their male counterparts.
