The recent passing of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, prompted an outpouring of sympathy and prayers across social media. However, one comment, rather than showing respect, harshly stated, “God can never accept his soul. As a matter of fact, his soul has been burning in hell for three weeks now.”

Such a statement disregards the compassion traditionally extended during times of loss. Public figures, even those in powerful roles, deserve basic respect in death, and harsh comments during mourning only deepen division. Insensitive responses overshadow moments meant for reflection and empathy, affecting not only the family but also the morale of a grieving community.

Acknowledging shared humanity and refraining from hurtful comments can foster unity, even amid differing opinions. Respect, especially in mourning, upholds dignity and compassion in society.
