A recent picture post showed a modest apartment with just a mattress and two bags. The caption read, “If you don’t have money to get an apartment, stay with your parents. What is this?!” This comment, shaming someone’s humble beginnings, reflects a troubling view on success and self-worth.

Not everyone starts out with luxury, and there’s no shame in beginning small. For many, an empty apartment is a symbol of courage and independence—a place to grow and build toward a better future. Dismissing someone’s progress because it doesn’t fit a certain standard discourages those taking the first steps.

Rather than mocking modest starts, we should respect each person’s journey and celebrate resilience. Every beginning, no matter how simple, deserves respect.
