Following the incident where an NYSC member was beaten by teachers for allegedly “not greeting properly,” a controversial response suggested, “NYSC has outlived its relevance. It’s become a waste of time and resources. It should be scrapped.” While frustration with the program is understandable, especially in light of such mistreatment, calling for its scrapping overlooks the broader benefits that the NYSC still offers, including fostering national unity, community service, and skill development. Rather than scrapping the program entirely, the focus should be on reforming it to ensure the safety, respect, and fair treatment of corps members.
