After a Nigerian soldier on leave was arrested with 350 rounds of ammunition hidden in a sack, many Nigerians rightfully condemned the act. However, one user deflected responsibility by commenting, “When the govt pays our soldiers peanuts, that’s the result.” This kind of reasoning is dangerous. While poor welfare for soldiers is a valid concern, it should never be used to justify or excuse criminal behavior. Soldiers are entrusted with the nation’s security; misuse of that trust—regardless of pay—is a serious offense. Blaming the government for every individual wrongdoing only enables lawlessness and weakens the call for true accountability.
