A comment under the news of a Nigerian man jailed in India read: “Chinedu, Biafra man, need money to build mansion in Nnewi 😂😂😂.” This mockery, disguised as humor, unfairly targets the Igbo tribe by reducing a crime committed by one individual to a tribal stereotype. What makes it worse is that the original post never mentioned the man’s ethnicity. Such remarks do not only ridicule Igbo people but also deepen tribal divides in Nigeria. Crime has no ethnic identity, and dragging tribes into unrelated issues is a dangerous habit that promotes prejudice rather than justice.
