When the FBI announced a $10,000 reward for the arrest of a Nigerian man wanted for fraud, discussions should have centered on crime and justice. Instead, some turned it into tribal banter. Despite the suspect’s Yoruba name, one comment read: “This should be an Igbo guy, Yorubas don’t do fraud, they are all saints and very innocent.” Such statements reveal deep-rooted bigotry. Fraud is not tied to Igbo, Yoruba, or any tribe; it is a personal choice. Shifting blame to another group only fuels division and distracts from the real issue: holding criminals accountable.
