A controversial reaction followed a story about a woman who left her marriage after her husband betrayed her by sleeping with and impregnating their maid. The comment read: “The man betrayed his wife and did her wrong. But she shouldn’t have left. She should have stayed and protected her home.”
This statement is deeply contradictory. It acknowledges wrongdoing yet places the burden of “protection” on the victim rather than the perpetrator. The home was not broken by her decision to leave; it was destabilized by the husband’s actions—infidelity, abuse of power, and disregard for marital boundaries.
Expecting a woman to remain and absorb humiliation in the name of preservation ignores emotional safety, dignity, and accountability. Protection of a home begins with fidelity and responsibility—things the husband failed to uphold. Staying is not strength when it requires silence in the face of harm.
