A video surfaced online showing a man adding an LG label to the carton of a new television and reselling it as an original LG product. The clip reignited concerns about fake electronics being sold in Nigeria and the broader issue of consumer fraud.
While many reactions focused on regulation and accountability, one comment took a discriminatory turn, stating “Mostly Igbos. Fake drugs, fake drinks, most fake things, they make it.” The remark shifted blame from individual criminal behavior to an entire ethnic group, unfairly attributing the problem of counterfeit goods to Igbo people as a whole. Rather than addressing enforcement failures or specific offenders, the comment relied on ethnic stereotyping, deepening division and obscuring the real issues behind counterfeiting.
