A court recently ordered the remand of an activist accused of insulting Seyi Tinubu and IGP Egbetokun in a Facebook video, igniting debates about governance and free speech in Nigeria. One comment read, “Army should take over then we understand is army.”

This sentiment reveals frustration with civilian governance but ignores the historical consequences of military rule in Nigeria—human rights abuses, corruption, and economic setbacks. Advocating for a return to military control undermines the progress made in democratic governance, however imperfect. Instead, efforts should focus on strengthening institutions, promoting accountability, and ensuring citizens’ voices are heard within a democratic framework.
