Following the shocking news that ISWAP terrorists killed Brigadier General Uba — an attack unprecedented in Nigeria’s 15 years of battling insurgency — social media erupted with fear, anger, and frustration. In the middle of the chaos, one user dropped a gloomy comment: “Being a soldier in Nigeria is like fighting a lost cause.”
This statement, though born from frustration, is deeply harmful. It dismisses the sacrifice of thousands of soldiers who continue to put their lives on the line to protect the country. Calling their efforts a “lost cause” not only undermines morale but also strengthens the psychological advantage of terrorists who thrive on public hopelessness.
Nigeria may be struggling, but painting the entire military effort as pointless is unfair and irresponsible. Soldiers need support, reform, and encouragement — not words that invalidate their courage.
