After reports that a UK-based Nigerian man and another person were sentenced to life imprisonment for a 2017 East London murder, one user commented, “If UK ever closes their borders to Nigeria like Dubai, blame Yariba.”

This comment is an example of dangerous ethnic stereotyping. A crime committed by individuals should never be used to insult or generalize an entire tribe. Such remarks not only promote division but also fuel ethnic hatred among Nigerians, both home and abroad. Crime has no ethnic boundary — people from any region can commit or avoid it. Instead of turning a criminal case into tribal warfare, Nigerians should unite in condemning wrongdoing and promoting accountability without bias.
