A recent report on X stated that Iraq plans to lower the age of sexual consent from 18 to 9, permitting men to legally marry minors. This news has sparked global concern, yet one comment by @hotpenis_1 stated, “We outside the Middle East have nothing to do with their own affairs. As long as it won’t affect us.”
Such an indifferent response overlooks the fundamental issue: the protection of children’s rights and well-being. Turning a blind eye to child exploitation, simply because it is happening elsewhere, shows a troubling lack of empathy. Human rights issues transcend borders and should be confronted universally. Remaining silent implies complicity, allowing harmful practices to persist unchallenged, despite their detrimental effects on vulnerable lives.
