The National Assembly’s move to shift the presidential elections to November 2026 stirred diverse reactions, with one comment suggesting, “They should also consider making the tenure of politicians a six-year single term.” While it may sound appealing, this idea oversimplifies Nigeria’s political challenges. Extending tenure doesn’t guarantee good governance; instead, it could reduce accountability since leaders won’t worry about re-election. Nigeria’s problems lie more in corruption, weak institutions, and lack of transparency than in the length of political terms. True progress will come from strengthening accountability systems and ensuring that public office remains about service, not extended power or privilege.
