A recent post reported the arrest of a gun runner in Zamfara who was caught transporting rifles and bullets hidden inside bags of dried fish. The news shocked many, as it highlighted how deeply illegal arms trafficking has penetrated local trade routes. In reaction, one user controversially commented, “This is the more reason why Nigeria should legalize firearms and license it officially. So that those who can afford it will be able to protect and defend themselves.”
While the frustration behind that comment is understandable, such reasoning is dangerous. Legalizing firearms in a country already battling insecurity, weak institutions, and poor regulation could worsen the violence. Rather than legalize guns, Nigeria should focus on strengthening security forces, improving intelligence, and enforcing stricter penalties for arms smuggling to ensure peace and safety for all citizens.
