In light of the recent turmoil in Rivers State, with the burning of the LGA office following the state election results, a comment suggesting that Governor Fubara should “surrender” to ex-Governor Wike for peace to reign is troubling. While the desire for peace is commendable, promoting surrender as a solution undermines the democratic process and the rule of law.
True peace cannot be achieved through capitulation; it requires dialogue, understanding, and respect for the electorate’s will. Surrendering to political pressure only sets a dangerous precedent, suggesting that might makes right. Instead, leaders must engage constructively to address the grievances of their constituents, fostering an environment where all voices are heard and respected. Only then can Rivers State hope to move forward toward lasting peace and stability.
