Following the arrest of suspects—including a vigilante leader—linked to a brutal attack on a community in Benue State, one user commented: “If you resist the terror herdsmen they will frame you. We know the game.”
Comments like this amplify fear and distrust in justice. While Nigeria faces serious security challenges, framing resistance as futile or inherently criminal discourages citizens from standing up against violence. It normalizes impunity for perpetrators and positions victims or defenders as potential offenders.
Spreading the idea that “resistance equals framing” shifts the narrative from seeking accountability to resigning to terror. It erodes confidence in law enforcement and public institutions, leaving communities vulnerable to manipulation and further attacks.
The Red Flag is not just the crime itself, but a culture that conditions citizens to fear defending themselves and doubt justice. Awareness and civic engagement, not fear, are the real remedies.
