Amid conversations about men demanding virgins for marriage while freely engaging in premarital sex themselves, one comment stood out: “If she’s not a virgin, I’d argue the bride price list to my satisfaction.” This statement is deeply problematic. It treats a woman’s sexual history as a bargaining chip and reduces her worth to a financial negotiation. Bride price, in its cultural context, is meant to symbolize union and respect between families—not punishment or price reduction based on perceived “purity.” Such comments reinforce harmful double standards where men’s sexual pasts are excused while women are penalized. Marriage built on entitlement, control, or humiliation cannot foster mutual respect. Women are not commodities, and their value cannot be discounted based on experiences men often freely permit themselves.
