After the sentencing of Chukwudi Nwachukwu, who was found guilty of trafficking 20 young Nigerian girls to Ghana for prostitution, one insensitive and tribalistic comment read, “Ibo people disgracing Nigeria home and away as usual smh.”

This remark unfairly stereotypes an entire ethnic group based on the crime of one individual. Such comments not only promote hate but also deepen ethnic division in the country. Crimes should be condemned on an individual basis — not tied to a person’s tribe or origin. Every ethnic group has both good and bad individuals, and it is wrong to label millions of people as “a disgrace” because of one person’s actions. This kind of generalization fuels unnecessary resentment and disunity.
