A troubling image online sparked a discussion about a woman sleeping almost naked, with users debating what they would do if she were a housemaid in their home. Amid the comments, one woman shared that she had once experienced sexual abuse by a relative and never spoke about it. Instead of empathy or concern, another user replied: “But this one na house maid na me go Kalaputa oo,” implying that because the woman is a domestic worker, non-consensual sex would be acceptable. This comment is extremely dangerous. It promotes sexual violence, dehumanizes domestic workers, and reinforces the idea that power and proximity justify abuse. Such statements silence survivors, normalize rape culture, and expose how casually consent is dismissed online. Abuse is never excusable, regardless of a person’s role, status, or environment.
