A disturbing report on X revealed that 25 girls from Ebonyi State who were earlier declared missing were later found in a brothel in Anambra State, allegedly being forced into prostitution. The incident reignited conversations around human trafficking, exploitation, poverty, and the failure of systems meant to protect vulnerable women and girls.

However, amid these discussions, a deeply insensitive comment stood out: “Na normal thing for Ibo land, their women do akwuna to feed their hungry parents.” Instead of condemning trafficking or empathizing with the victims, the comment relied on crude ethnic stereotyping, reducing a serious crime to a blanket insult against an entire group. Such remarks divert attention from accountability and normalize harmful prejudice rather than addressing the real issue at hand.
