A post (reportedly) showing Governor Alex Otti criticizing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu over the demolition of Igbo-owned properties at the Lagos Trade Fair Complex sparked outrage. In the heat of the comments, one user wrote: “God will punish the governor of Lagos state. Lets begin to destroy business operated by Yoruba in the east.”
This is dangerous and unlawful. Calling for the destruction of businesses and collective punishment based on ethnicity amounts to incitement and can spiral into violence. Retaliation hurts innocent people, destroys livelihoods, and undermines any legitimate call for justice. The right path is legal redress, peaceful protest, media scrutiny, and political pressure for accountability and compensation—not revenge. Violence solves nothing and makes the problem far worse.
