After news broke that Senate President Godswill Akpabio was hospitalized in London, a comment read: “London is the problem of Nigeria. We the Nigerians that cannot travel to London for medical cannot wish him well.” While anger over medical tourism and inequality is understandable, this response is misguided and insensitive. London is not responsible for Nigeria’s failing healthcare system; decades of poor governance, corruption, and underinvestment are. Blaming another country distracts from holding Nigerian leaders and institutions accountable for the collapse of local medical facilities. Moreover, using frustration as a reason to withhold basic human empathy during a health crisis dehumanizes the conversation. Criticism should target policies and leadership failures—not justify cruelty or misplaced blame.
