Following the National Assembly’s move to shift the presidential elections to November 2026 under a new electoral amendment, many Nigerians began suggesting changes to the country’s political structure. One comment suggested, “They should make it six years single tenure,” arguing it would allow leaders more time to deliver results. However, this idea overlooks Nigeria’s real governance problems. Extending tenure without improving accountability may only deepen corruption and reduce citizens’ power to demand change. What the nation truly needs isn’t longer time in office but stronger systems that ensure transparency, effective leadership, and genuine service to the people.
