A man claimed that women would rather die lonely and unmarried than return home, get a husband, and take him abroad. In response, a woman shared what she presented as a cautionary story:
“My aunt’s daughter came back to Nigeria, picked a husband and took him abroad. She is sponsoring him in school, only na the guy dey do house chores, dey go errands, even dey babysit their first child.”
While intended as a counterargument, this comment is problematic. It frames partnership and role reversal as something shameful, reinforcing rigid gender expectations that a man must always be the provider and a woman must never lead financially. Domestic work and childcare are treated as humiliation rather than responsibility. Such narratives discourage equality and mutual support in marriages, promoting toxic masculinity and misogyny instead of healthy, balanced relationships built on cooperation and respect.
