In a viral video on X, an NDLEA officer claimed that they had the right to enter homes and search phones without a warrant. While certain emergency cases may justify a home search, no Nigerian law grants NDLEA agents the authority to search an individual’s phone without a warrant. Despite this, one user defended the officer, saying, “The officer is right under Nigeria NDLEA law; those guys are permitted to search him.”
This comment is misleading. A phone is a private entity protected under constitutional rights to privacy, and any unauthorized search is a violation. Spreading such misinformation normalizes abuse of power and erodes citizens’ awareness of their legal rights.
