After news broke that ISWAP ambushed the Nigerian Army and abducted a serving Army General, emotions ran high across social media. In the chaos, one user simply declared, “Nigeria has no leadership structure.”

While frustration with governance is understandable, sweeping statements like this oversimplify a complex issue. Nigeria does have leadership structures — the problem is how effectively they function, not whether they exist. Reducing the nation’s challenges to “there is no leadership” shuts down meaningful conversation and blocks any path toward accountability or reform.

Critique is necessary, but it should be grounded, not exaggerated. When we throw around absolute statements, we replace solutions with despair.

Nigeria needs improved leadership, not the denial of leadership altogether.
