A post circulated on X claiming that Akwa Ibom State had passed a law allowing the arrest of women who sleep with married men, sentencing them to 10 years in prison without the option of a fine, while the married man involved would only pay a ₦2 million fine. The user ended the post by saying, “Nigeria is a joke,” which shifted the discussion from the alleged law to a blanket insult of the country.
Even if such a policy were being debated or misreported, it is valid to question its fairness, legality, or gender bias without resorting to degrading an entire nation. Laws should be criticized based on justice, equality, and constitutional rights, not used as an excuse to ridicule millions of people who have no control over them. Meaningful accountability comes from reasoned critique, not national shaming.
