In reaction to Senator Ted Cruz’s call for sanctions on Nigerian officials over insecurity, one user made a highly divisive statement: “Nigeria must be separated into two halves, Muslim half and Christian half. That’s the only way for the future.”

This statement is both misleading and dangerous. Nigeria is a country of many religions — including Islam, Christianity, and numerous traditional beliefs — and cannot be reduced to just two. Such comments ignore the nation’s diversity and promote hatred that threatens peaceful coexistence.

Rather than calling for separation, Nigerians should focus on addressing corruption, insecurity, and bad governance — the true issues undermining progress. Unity in diversity remains the foundation on which a stronger nation can stand.
