A post on X by an Igbo woman declaring that she is “single until married” has stirred fresh controversy and sexist backlash online. While many praised her clarity and traditional stance on commitment, others used it as an excuse to generalize and demean Nigerian women.
One particularly offensive response read: “I keep saying it. Nigerian Women dates more than 5 men at a Go, sleep with them and smartly cover her traces.”
The comment paints women as deceitful and promiscuous, turning one woman’s personal declaration into a sweeping accusation against an entire gender. Critics argue that it reflects deep-rooted misogyny and insecurity, using stereotypes to invalidate women’s choices and self-definition.
Supporters of the woman’s post say being “single until married” is her right, and that projecting sexual assumptions onto her — or any woman — only exposes how normalized disrespect toward women has become in online discourse.
