Following the alarming report that Ogun State recorded over 10,000 mental health patients in just six months, another insensitive comment stated, “Ogun State, the home of mad people.” Such a remark is deeply stigmatizing and offensive, not just to the people of Ogun State but to everyone struggling with mental health challenges. It mocks a serious issue that requires understanding, not ridicule. Labeling an entire state based on health statistics spreads ignorance and discourages people from seeking help. Mental illness is a medical condition, not a joke or an identity — and comments like this only worsen the stigma surrounding it.
