A man shared a story online about his friend Ejike, who brought his girlfriend from Nigeria to the UK. Both work as nurses, earning a combined £5,200 monthly, with bills totaling £2,300. Ejike asked her to contribute £1,000 while he covered £1,300. After three months, her attitude reportedly changed, and she began filing for divorce.
The post sparked numerous controversial reactions, including a tribalistic comment: “I know say na Igbo woman, check an see.” This type of remark unfairly reduces a complex relationship issue to ethnic identity, implying that behavior is tied to tribe. It shifts the focus from the actual problem—financial expectations and relationship dynamics—to prejudice, promoting division and reinforcing harmful stereotypes instead of encouraging thoughtful discussion about partnership and fairness.
